An Italian Company, Prime Elettronica Srl from Castelgomberto (Vi), Has Won the Contract with CERN in Geneva to Supply Electronic Boards for one of the most Important Scientific Projects of 2012, the Higgs Boson, also Known as the “God Particle”.
The discovery of the Higgs Boson is the scientific breakthrough of the year according to Science magazine.
From today, there “’s also a” Vicenza-based company participating in the project.
CERN, after a thorough analysis of the requirements due to the project’s complexity, had invited 10 top-level European companies (including two Italian ones) to participate in the tender for an initial supply of electronic boards.
These boards, called BTI, are integrated into the Trigger system of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment installed in CERN’s European laboratories: their characteristic is that they are associated with a category of sensors capable of detecting muons.
In the standard model of particles, the muonis anelementary subatomic particle with negative electric charge, belonging, together with the electron, tau, and neutrinos, to the lepton group.
A special processing allows scientists to select significant events, reconstructing the tracks left by particles generated following proton-antiproton collisions, which occur at the center of the detector at a rate of 40 million per second.
The BTI boards were designed and developed by the “INFN of the Padua section to be used in the control system of part of the” electronics installed in the CMS detector.

1) THE HIGGS BOSON
The identification of the Higgs boson would allow us to understand how matter formed in the first moments of the Universe’s life, helping us understand something fundamental about the origin of the Cosmos. This particle, first hypothesized over 40 years ago, represents the key to explaining how other particles are able to obtain mass.
It was discovered thanks to two experiments conducted in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva: the first, Atlas, coordinated by Italian Fabiola Gianotti from the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), whose role in the discovery included her in the shortlist for Time magazine’s cover, and the other, CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid), currently led by American Joe Incandela.

3) WHY “GOD PARTICLE”?
It was Nobel Prize winner Leon Lederman who, in his popular science book, indicated the Higgs boson with this name: the missing link in our understanding of the Universe.
In reality, according to what Peter Higgs himself recounted four years ago, Lederman initially wanted to call it not the “God particle”, but the “goddamn particle”, damned because it was an inexplicable puzzle. Unfortunately for him, his editor decided to “censor” this definition, opting for the “God particle”.
