{"id":7414,"date":"2012-04-15T15:10:04","date_gmt":"2012-04-15T13:10:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.primelettronica.com\/pcb-delamination\/"},"modified":"2012-04-15T15:10:04","modified_gmt":"2012-04-15T13:10:04","slug":"pcb-delamination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.primelettronica.com\/en\/pcb-delamination\/","title":{"rendered":"PCB Delamination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"justify\">This article is part of a series of documents aimed at providing education and information to all Prime customers and anyone who uses printed circuit boards.<br \/>\nWe want to provide some guidance on how to reduce the phenomenon of \u201c\u201d<em>Delamination in printed circuit boards \u201c\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"justify\">First of all, it \u201cis important to know that Printed Circuit Boards are manufactured using composite material (FR4 and its variants). <em>This is a highly HYGROSCOPIC material<\/em>, which means\u201d it is \u201cparticularly sensitive to\u201d environmental humidity \u201c, regardless of the packaging\u201d method.<br \/>\nAny \u201cmoisture\u201d that is not eliminated will \u201ctransform into vapor during the soldering phases, causing cracks, blistering, delamination, blowholes, and microcavities\u201d in the most \u201csensitive areas of the\u201d assembly.<br \/>\nTo prevent this phenomenon, it \u201cis helpful to have appropriate methods for\u201d packaging, storage, and potential drying of the printed circuit board before entering production.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"justify\">It \u201cis good practice to consider the printed circuit board as a\u201d\u201cperishable\u201d\u201cmaterial; Prime suggests not to exceed storage beyond eight months (unless there are different indications on the\u201d packaging provided by the PCB manufacturer), even if the circuits are vacuum-packed. (Usually, suppliers pack the circuits in airtight packages with Nitrogen).<br \/>\nThe various PCB manufacturers we work with suggest that storage should take place in suitable enclosed environments appropriate for the intended use, maintained at an ambient temperature of 20 degrees C +\/- 5 degrees C with \u201cmaximum relative humidity\u201d (RH) of 70%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is important that after 8-10 weeks from the production date (shown on the package and\/or on the circuit itself), the boards should always undergo conditioning treatment (Baking).<br \/>\n<em>This treatment allows for the complete elimination of \u201cmoisture\u201d\u201c\u201d absorbed \u201c\u201d by the printed circuit board.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"justify\">Depending on the circuit finish (HAL, Chemical Gold etc.), Prime has established different reconditioning methods. If interested, don&#8217;t hesitate to contact our technical office<strong> <em><a href=\"mailto:tecnico@primelettronica.com\">tecnico@primelettronica.com<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" align=\"justify\">Reconditioning is performed using a static oven, preferably with air circulation, stacking the circuits in piles of no more than \u201c10 boards on top of each other\u201d. <em>(MIL-55110)<\/em><br \/>\nBe aware that prolonged and uncontrolled oven exposure can \u201cseriously compromise the solderability\u201d of the board and trigger a process of \u201c\u201d premature aging \u201c\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We hope this information has been useful.
