An Italian Company, Prime Elettronica Srl from Castelgomberto (Vi), Has Won the Contract with CERN in Geneva to Supply Electronic Boards for one of the most Important Scientific Projects of 2012, the Higgs Boson<\/b>, also Known as the “God Particle”.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/span><\/h2>\n

The discovery of the Higgs Boson is the scientific breakthrough of the year according to Science magazine.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From today, there \u201c’s also a\u201d Vicenza-based company participating in the project. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

CERN, after a thorough analysis of the requirements due to the project’s complexity, had invited 10 top-level European companies (including two Italian ones) to participate in the tender for an initial supply of electronic boards.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

These boards, called BTI, are integrated into the Trigger system of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment installed in CERN’s European laboratories: their characteristic is that they are associated with a category of sensors capable of detecting muons.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the standard model of particles, the muon<\/span>is an<\/span>elementary subatomic particle with negative electric charge, belonging, together with the electron, tau, and neutrinos, to the lepton group.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A special processing allows scientists to select significant events, reconstructing the tracks left by particles generated following proton-antiproton collisions, which occur at the center of the detector at a rate of 40 million per second.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The BTI boards were designed and developed by the \u201cINFN of the Padua section to be used in the control system of part of the\u201d electronics installed in the CMS detector.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

1) THE HIGGS BOSON<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The identification of the Higgs boson would allow us to understand how matter formed in the first moments of the Universe’s life, helping us understand something fundamental about the origin of the Cosmos. This particle, first hypothesized over 40 years ago, represents the key to explaining how other particles are able to obtain mass. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It was discovered thanks to two experiments conducted in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva: the first, Atlas, coordinated by Italian Fabiola Gianotti from the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), whose role in the discovery included her in the shortlist for Time magazine’s cover, and the other, CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid), currently led by American Joe Incandela.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

This ambitious project involves 38 member states representing 183 scientific institutes with approximately 3,800 researchers involved<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

At CERN in Geneva, the Higgs Boson has been identified, which explains why all things in the universe have mass. It was theorized 48 years ago by English scientist Peter Higgs, now 84 years old. “The Higgs boson, the famous ‘God particle’, exists and has finally been captured without any doubt in CERN’s LHC superaccelerator in Geneva,” explained Rolf Heuer, CERN director. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

2) THE DISCOVERY<\/b><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

After fifty years, Milan-born Fabiola Gianotti and American Joe Incandela, spokespersons for their respective experiments, presented their conclusions to CERN’s scientific community regarding the final phase of investigations that began in December 2011 when, also at CERN, they had presented the first evidence of the fateful particle’s existence. Past uncertainties have definitively collapsed. But with a double surprise. “The Higgs boson” \u2013 explains Guido Tonelli, spokesperson for the CMS experiment until a few months ago \u2013 “not only do we now have it before our eyes, but it has also opened the way to new physics.” <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

3) WHY “GOD PARTICLE”?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It was Nobel Prize winner Leon Lederman who, in his popular science book, indicated the Higgs boson with this name: the missing link in our understanding of the Universe.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In reality, according to what Peter Higgs himself recounted four years ago, Lederman initially wanted to call it not the \u201cGod particle\u201d, but the \u201cgoddamn particle\u201d, damned because it was an inexplicable puzzle. Unfortunately for him, his editor decided to \u201ccensor\u201d this definition, opting for the \u201cGod particle\u201d. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
